Volunteers

Guidelines for Managers

The STC acts only to facilitate volunteer opportunities: we are not responsible for the abilities of possible volunteers, or the quality of the results.

Please drop a line to the chapter webmaster once a volunteer position has been filled.

When working with volunteers, we recommend that you do these things:

  • Be as clear as possible about what you need done, in what timeframe, and for what purpose.
  • Be available to your volunteer – especially early in a project, when important questions may arise that need to be answered quickly.
  • Keep an open mind: your volunteer might bring a valuable new perspective to a problem.
  • Be flexible: your volunteer might have work, school, or job search commitments as well.
  • If the volunteer needs to gather information or work with more than one person at your organization, assign one person to be the main contact, to avoid confusion and possible delays.
  • Give constructive feedback to the volunteer, both on how the work was approached and its results.
