STC Toronto Single Sourcing SIG

We invite you to join a growing group of technical communicators as we get together to discuss single sourcing concepts. Toronto STC Single Sourcing SIG helps members share knowledge and perspective on researching, developing, and implementing single-sourcing solutions. We discuss the state-of-the-art in single-sourcing and explore the technologies and methodology behind this industry best practice.

Note: The STC Toronto SIG has no relationship with the society-level SIG; it is FREE to join.

About the SIG

The society-level SIG has 60-plus active members within the GTA. All Toronto-area STC members are welcome to participate in the chapter-level Single Sourcing SIG. Our audience includes technical writers, documentation and training specialists, content developers,information architects, information designers and localisation specialists. We will make every effort to bring together all levels of experience from novice to expert.

Areas of Interest

The SIG will address the following areas of interest:

• Information models
• Cost/benefit and case studies
• Tools (editors, content management systems, publishing, DTD, etc.)
• XML and structured language
• Writing for a single-sourcing environment
• Low cost single sourcing alternatives
• All forms of single-sourcing including master-document and database driven solutions.
• Enterprise content management

Goals

• Help STC members who are considering single-sourcing research appropriate solutions.
• Promote the practice of structured writing for content management and reuse.
• Educate and support those who are considering single sourcing projects.
• Provide objective information about the tools used in single sourcing.
• Locate and distribute sources for information on single sourcing including case studies, articles,books and white papers.
• Encourage membership and participation in the STC and society-level SIG.
• Get involved with local conferences and initiatives as they relate to our areas of interest.
• Cross-pollinate with other SIGs and local area chapters as they relate to our areas of interest.
• Form a think tank to gain consensus on common terminology and advocate open standards in single-sourcing and content management.

Background

This initiative began when a group of us from the society-level Single-Sourcing SIG began meeting informally in June 2002. In October 2002, the Toronto STC chapter executive voted in favour of accepting the group as a chapter-level SIG. At the same time the society-level SIG stepped up to offer its support by offsetting a portion of our expenses. Toronto is the first STC chapter to form a local single-sourcing group affiliated with the society-level SIG.
