General Meeting on January 11th:
An Introduction to Informations Architecture for Technical Writers
Presented by Steven Lemay

A common goal between information architecture and technical writing is to effectively get users to the information they need. But how do we design information spaces, be they web sites, on-line help systems, manuals or some other collection of information, that achieve this goal?

In this presentation we will examine how Information Architecture attempts to answer this question and how this relates to technical writing. In particular, we will look at two specific IA concepts that may be equally useful to technical writers: card sorting and the scent of information.

Steven LeMay is an information architect, interaction designer and usability specialist who's experience includes work with a broad range of firms from large corporations to fledgling start-ups, from the financial industry to the not-for-profit sector. Included in these is RBC Royal Bank, CIBC, Fidelity Investments, CGI, Usability Matters and extendMedia. Recently, Steven joined Toronto based FMC, an international financial software company, as Manager, User Interface Design.

STC Montréal Presents:
Single-Sourcing with FrameMaker with Louis Beauregard

Beyond tools, successful single-sourcing requires a systematic approach that maximizes reuse and enables production automation. In this hands-on workshop, you will learn to apply a proven methodology for single-sourcing that not only leverages the power of instructional design and usability heuristics, but also introduces significant efficiencies in the authoring and production processes.

You will learn to:

  • Perform a semantic analysis of your content
  • Identify opportunities for reuse
  • Create pedagogically-sound outputs (help, Web-based training, print)
  • Apply semantic tagging strategies
  • Develop FM templates while applying single-sourcing best practices
  • Automate your PDF and help output.

Date: January 19, 2005
