From the President's Desk:
Five Easy Ways to Keep Your Career Current by Robert Milkovich, STC Toronto President Ongoing professional development is essential for maintaining and growing any career. Changes in technology and the structure of the economy mean that one can't sit still for very long. Keeping current with all the latest changes in software can be a daunting task, but it doesn't need to be. Let?s look at five ways that we can keep ourselves current with a minimum of effort: 1. Attend an STC Toronto monthly meeting. We host monthly meetings on a variety of topics, some of which may be completely new to you. They're a great way to get what you need to learn in a nutshell and form a basis for further exploration. You can also meet and network with people who are going through the same things as you ? remember, you?re not alone! Come and find the answers from others who have been there before. 2. Read the STC Toronto newsletter. We feature some outstanding columnists that you won?t find anywhere else on subjects such as interviewing, using the tools of the trade, succeeding at your job, and more. 3. Read STC's Intercom magazine. One of the benefits of your STC membership is a magazine written by your peers on every technical communication subject imaginable. It also features a calendar of events for all chapters in STC, and updates on what's happening at the Society offices. It's a great way to keep up with the latest trends and to learn tips to solve problems that we all face. 4. Take a course online. If you?re pressed for time, taking a course online is a great way to learn something new without having to show up at the same time every week. Besides continuing education courses at local colleges, you can also take graduate degrees in technical communication online while you stay on the job. 5. Read books on skills that you want to acquire. Almost every subject now has a 'Learn this subject in three weeks or less' book, or a Dummies or Idiots book that condenses things into easy-to-learn chunks. You don't need to buy expensive, academic textbooks to learn new skills anymore. |
