Michael Bryans

Michael BryansMichael Bryans is a Senior Member of the STC. His experience spans a broad range of technical communications. For over a dozen years, Mike has authored manuals, Help, and other documentation in software development environments. Previously, he worked in the land surveying and land information industry both in the office and in the field.

Mike graduated with a diploma in geodetic science in 1978 (Ryerson). In that career, he gathered, researched, analyzed and processed information for land registration, as well as performed legal, topographic, engineering, and construction surveys. The challenge was to translate specialized property information and measurements into written or graphical descriptions suitable for a broad audience (the public, surveyors, engineers, and legal experts).

After completing a BA in political science in 1992, Mike realized that his skills gathering, translating, and communicating land information might be well suited to a career in technical and professional writing. He received a York University certificate in technical and professional writing in 1995.

Recently, Mike worked for over 8 years in the host access and connectivity division of Hummingbird Ltd, the last 5 as Managing Editor, R&D Technical Writing. He has also documented encryption software/hardware and has authored documentation in support of ISO 9000 certification. Mike appreciates the value of clear, concise, and accurate data.

Mike has served as a judge on several local STC competitions. He is passionate about his work, as well as organized and methodical.

Mike lives with his wife Susan (and two spoiled cats) in west Pickering near the Rouge Valley. You can reach him at Tek-Scribe@rogers.com .
